Completed in 2025, CHB Architects, in collaboration with HNTB, was commissioned by United Airlines to modernize Building 108, a key residential dormitory at the United Aviate Academy in Goodyear, Arizona. Located at Phoenix Goodyear Airport, this project transforms the existing 40,000-square-foot facility into a state-of-the-art living environment for student pilots, supporting United’s mission to train up to 500 aviators annually amid a growing global demand for skilled pilots. The modernization focuses on upgrading structural and mechanical systems while enhancing aesthetic appeal and sustainability, creating a safe, efficient, and inspiring home for the next generation of aviators. By blending Arizona’s desert aesthetic with functional design, Building 108 fosters a supportive community that empowers students in United’s innovative training program.
Advanced Mechanical Systems Modernized HVAC systems with high-efficiency units and smart thermostats optimize climate control, ensuring year-round comfort in Goodyear’s extreme temperatures. Upgraded plumbing includes low-flow fixtures to conserve water, while new electrical systems support energy-efficient appliances and charging stations for personal devices.
Structural Upgrades The project reinforced Building 108’s structural integrity with seismic retrofitting, updated load-bearing systems, and enhanced foundation stability to ensure safety and longevity in Arizona’s arid climate. These upgrades meet stringent building codes, providing a secure environment for residents.
